Officer shoots man in Tampa

TAMPA, Fla. -- Tampa Police Officers are investigating an officer-involved shooting Saturday night.

Officers conducted a traffic stop for a missing headlight at about 9:30 p.m. near Florida Avenue and Ida Street. Police determined that the vehicle was stolen and that's when the driver fled the scene and eventually crashed into a tree near a home on Floribraska and Tampa Street.

The responding officers attempted to make contact with the driver -- 20-year-old Joel Alexander Cook -- when he put the car into reverse and backed into the hood of the officers' patrol cruiser. Two officers shot at the suspect.

Those officers are now on paid administrative leave.

Cook was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Cook was recently released from the Hillsborough County Jail on September 1, where he was currently serving time for Grand Theft Motor Vehicle.
