One driver dead, another seriously injured in I-275 crash

PINELLAS COUNTY, Fla. -- One man is dead and another was seriously injured following a crash on Interstate 275 just north of 54th Avenue South in St. Petersburg Tuesday morning.

Florida Highway Patrol said that the crash was started when a driver of a blue pickup truck pulled away from the northbound outside shoulder into the oncoming path of a Ford van driven by Thomas Scott Conely, 40, of St. Petersburg.

Conely attempted to drive away from the truck but lost control of the van, causing it to travel over the I-275 median and into another Ford van headed southbound on I-275 driven by Matthew Clifton Bassett, 35, of Treasure Island.

Both Conely and Bassett suffered critical injuries and were taken to Bayfront Heath St. Petersburg. Bassett was pronounced dead at the hospital.

FHP said that the driver of the pickup truck continued driving northbound on I-275 and did not stop, The identity of the driver is unknown. If you have information about the driver, contact the FHP at 813-631-4020.
