Polk mother and daughter critically injured in pedestrian crash

POLK COUNTY, Fla. -- A mother and her daughter were walking to the bus stop with another family member and a child the mother was babysitting on Weiberg Rd. around 7 AM when a car struck them.

Dundee resident Stephen Raisor was driving eastbound and did not see the woman and child on the road due to condensation on his windshield, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office. He and his wife immediately stopped and called 9-1-1.

Both mother and daughter were walking on the road during the crash and are in critical condition. 41-year-old Consuelo Cristanos was airlifted to Osceola Regional Medical Center and 7-year-old Esmeralda Garcia was sent to Lakeland Regional Medical Center.

The other children were unharmed.

The PCSO continue to investigate and do not think that speed or impairment was the cause of the crash.

Official, Jay Jarvis of the Polk County Roads & Drainage Division said that the county will investigate the crash history on Weiberg Road and "conduct a traffic study to document traffic volumes and speeds." The county will also assess the roadway for sidewalks and streetlights within the authority of the Sidewalk Advisory Committee.
