Lakeland man arrested in connection to hit-and-run

POLK COUNTY, Fla. -- A Lakeland man is in custody after his alleged involvement in a hit-and-run that killed a woman.

Jarvis Kendrick, 37, was arrested on one county of Leaving the Scene of a Crash Involving Death and one county of Tampering with Evidence, according to the Polk County Sheriff's Office press release.

The pedestrian was identified as Janice Joy, 74, who has Alzheimer's Disease who lived alone but was looked after by her neighbor.

There was a witness who saw Joy walking on Duff Road when she was hit by the truck. The witness told authorities that they honked at the passing Ford truck. The truck driver allegedly tapped the brakes but continued driving toward US-98.

Deputies received an anonymous tip that Kendrick's truck hadn't been seen after the hit-and-run. Kendrick lives near the crash scene, deputies said.

Further investigation showed on the date of the crash, Kendrick's employer said he should have been traveling to Longboat Key from Lakeland. Video later that day showed Kendrick's truck in Longboat Key and the passenger-side mirror was missing.

A passenger-side mirror was recovered from the crash scene.

Also. three days after the hit-and-run, Kendrick called the Florida Highway Patrol and reported he had crashed into a traffic sign after going off the road off Interstate 4 in Plant City. Deputies contacted the body shop Kentrick had taken his truck to and found a missing passenger-side mirror was among the damages.

FHP investigators went to the I-4 crash scene and found no broken glass or mirrors. The damage to the truck was not consistent with running into a traffic sign, the investigators said.

Kendrick was booked into the Polk County Jail, and bail was set at $50,000.
