Pinellas police arrest sex offender who burglarized homes

Pinellas Park, Florida -- Pinellas Park officers arrested a registered sex offender who attacked a woman and robbed a home on Friday morning.

Around 9:45 a.m. on Friday, Joseph "Lyle" Mathews, sexually battered a woman in the 6100 block of 105th Av. N. When the woman's boyfriend confronted Matthews, he brandished a knife and threatened the him with it.

Mathews then burglarized two home on the same block. While in the second home Pinellas Park officers responded and set up a perimeter.

K9 began checking the area of the residence and found the front door ajar and found Mathews hiding inside. Matthews was still armed with a knife and began to resist arrest as he was escorted from the residence.

Mathews was transported to an area hospital where he was admitted for injuries he sustained during his arrest. When he was released from the hospital he was then transported to the Pinellas County Jail where he was charged with one count of sexual battery, one count of aggravated assault, two counts of armed burglary, one count of resisting arrest with violence, and one count of battery on a law enforcement officer.

Matthews is also a registered sex offender.
