World class sand sculptors competing in Treasure Island

Love sand castles? You'll want to check out Treasure Island.

TREASURE ISLAND, Fla. -- Sand sculptors from around the world are in Tampa Bay for the 9th Annual Sanding Ovations Master’s Cup.

With $14,000 in prize money on the line, sculptors have four days to sculpt their creation.

Each sculpture has 14 tons of “coral sand” to work with. This special sand has a fine texture and is easier to sculpt with the sand you typically find on the beach.

The public is invited to attend this free event and watch as the masterpieces are created.

Event organizer, and centerpiece sculptor, Meredith Doubleday says, “These are gallery-quality sculptures, so we literally have people that come and set their chairs and they’ll sit there and watch all day.

"It’s mesmerizing.”

The Sanding Ovations Master’s Cup runs through Sunday, Nov. 19. It will have live music, vendors, food and fun activities for kids.
