Pit bulls put down after killing local 4-year-old boy

Riverview, Florida — A pit bull attack leaves a 4-year-old Riverview boy dead in a front yard and a neighborhood on edge.

It happened off of Rhodine road in Riverview around 10:30 Saturday night. A family member told 10 News the boy was visiting his aunt and uncle when the dogs attacked.

"Total tragedy," said neighbor Leslie Carl Sprang.

It's an unbelievable thought, sitting your child down with an ice cream in a house with two pit bulls locked in their crates, only to run out to his screams, the two pits standing over his body in the front yard.

That's what sheriff's deputies say happened in Riverview late Saturday.

Four-year-old Logan Shepard and his mom, Stephanie Groulx went to visit Logan's aunt and uncle. Reports say Logan's uncle Billy Fredericks had crated the two dogs before Logan and his mom got to the home. But something happened when the adults went to talk in the bedroom, leaving Logan alone with his ice cream.

"They have their whole life ahead of them," Sprang said. "It's taken away from them tragically because of an incident like this," he said.

A family member told 10 News, "If we could all foresee what could happen in the next 20 minutes there wouldn't be tragedy."

Hillsborough County Sheriff's deputies say it happened just inside the Billy Frederick's fence. Four-year-old Logan Shepard was somehow able to get out of the front of the house, Frederick's two pit bulls came after him and ended up killing him in the front yard.

It's a tragic incident that's left some neighbors worried.

"An innocent four-year-old kid that a dog bit and she doesn't want that to happen again," said Victor DeLeon, translating for his mother Christina Ramos who lives nearby.

Ramos said she's worried about her own kids walking down the street now with all of the dogs in the neighborhood.

Hillsborough Animal Services euthanized the two pit bulls Sunday afternoon. There are no charges against Logan's mother or his aunt and uncle at this time.
