WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (WTSP) – Polk County officials were prepared for the worst as they watched Hurricane Matthew approach Florida’s east coast. As the storm came in Friday morning it became clear that Polk County had avoided any major impact. No damage reports came in overnight and only a few minor power outages were reported across the county.
Emergency responders who were ready to respond began turning their attention to other areas of the state. Since they were not needed in Polk County, local emergency personnel prepared to be deployed to other counties that were hit harder by the storm.
Close to 600 people made use of county emergency shelters Thursday night into Friday morning. Public schools in Polk County were closed both days leading into the weekend as a precaution.
