Lake Wales, Florida -- Polk County Sheriff's deputies continue to investigate a deadly crash on Hesperides Road (Hwy 60 E) between a semi truck and a car Thursday.
Preliminary evidence from the scene indicates just before 2:30 p.m., a semi truck heading east collided with a Mercedes that was heading west. The collision occurred in the eastbound lane.
Both drivers were wearing their seatbelts, but the driver of the Mercedes was killed. The car was found fully engulfed in flames and investigators have been unable at this time to make a positive identification on the driver.
Both east and westbound lanes of traffic from Highway 630 to County Line Road were closed for almost seven hours before being reopened around 9:30 p.m.
