Winter Haven man killed in Polk crash

An 81-year-old Winter Haven man was called in a crash Tuesday afternoon in Lake Wales, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies say Harry Swift was a passenger in a Chevy Malibu driven by his wife, Joan, heading southbound on U.S. Hwy. 27. The Malibu attempted to turn left onto 1st Avenue North but was struck in the passenger side by a northbound Peterbilt semi tractor-trailer.

The semi then struck a Ford van but the van’s occupants were not injured, according to deputies.

Both Joan and Harry Swift were airlifted to Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center, where Harry Swift later died. Joan Swift was reported in critical but stable condition. The driver of the semi was not injured.

The drivers and occupants of all three vehicles were wearing their seatbelts. The PCSO’s investigation is ongoing.
