St. Petersburg, Florida -- Derby Lane owners want Pinellas County voters to chime in on legalizing slot machines.
Pinellas County commissioners were asked by Derby Lane Vice President Richard Winning Tuesday to schedule a referendum this November to allow the dog track to have slot machines.
Winning argued the track needs the slots to compete with the Seminole Tribe and generate more revenue.
Even if the referendum is passed by voters, the measure would still require approval from state lawmakers.
After hearing from Winning, Pinellas County Commissioner Norm Roche argued that commissioners don't have the time to vet a slots referendum for the November ballot.
