Rain doesn't dampen St. Patrick's Day parties

St. Petersburg, Florida -- Come rain or shine, downtown St. Pete is celebrating St. Patrick's Day.

The bars are stocked with all the green accessories customers will need, from green hats to green glasses and blinking green rings. From Central Ave. to First Street SE along Beach Drive is blocked off for one block party in front of Courigan's Irish Pub.

The other block party is blocked off along First Avenue between 1st and 2nd Streets.

Courigans has a port-a-party bus parked out front with an over hang to protect lads and lasses from the rain. They will have live music playing until 2:00 a.m.

They had a mimi bar dedicated only to serving America's favorite Irish drink, the Irish Car Bomb.

"The name is kind of offensive to true Itish folks, especially those who are aware of the troubles between England and Ireland," said Courigan's general manager Pete Boland. "But in America it's the most popular shot on St. Patrick's Day. It's a half pint of Guiness with a shot of equal parts Baileys and Irish whiskey dropped into it and when done correctly and drank fast, it tastes just like a Wendy's Frosty!"

Hundreds are expected to pack the downtown parties, but with the strong winds, the rain, thunder, lightning and the tornado watch until 11 p.m. customers are slowly trickling in.

"We are not worried, they will come!" said Boland. "Some people sneak off before work or after work and there are a lot of us who are taking the day off, too."

The street will be blocked off until 11 p.m. and then the bars will remain open until 3 a.m.
