Red light runner blamed in Tampa power outage

Tampa, Florida -- A red light runner who crashed into power pole and fled on foot caused the blackout that affected some 14,000 TECO customers on Friday night, police said.

As of 10:30 p.m. the TECO outage map showed that power has been restored to the area.

Police don't know why the man in his 20s was driving at a high rate of speed on Bird Street or why he failed to stop at the red light at East Bird and North Nebraska Avenue.

They say he lost control and struck a TECO pole and continued driving, then struck a parked vehicle. The driver then fled on foot.

Detectives are on scene working on leads to identify the driver.

Police said at one point all the traffic lights were out on North Nebraska between Busch Boulevard and Sligh Avenue.

For a time, Tampa police directing traffic at several intersections.
