Lake Wales -- A 95-year-old woman remains in intensive care Tuesday night a day after an SUV slammed through a wall of the restaurant where she was celebrating her birthday with her husband.
Her husband, by her side, was also injured by the SUV.
"As long as I keep it in the sling it don't hurt," said Carl Sheldon, who was injured when diver of the SUV lost control and slammed into the L'Incontro's Italian Restaurant, 35 State Road 60 West, in Lake Wales.
From the outside, Carl Sheldon, 81, is banged up and bruised.
"I have a great big one up here," Sheldon said.
But it's what's inside, is what hurts the most.
"It took me a minute to get my wits and she didn't know what was going on. It was tough," Sheldon said.
His wife was injured so badly she was flown by helicopter to the hospital.
"It had to have hit her in the back of the chair and that's why she's so banged up," Sheldon said. "She had broken ribs, internal bleeding."
Carl and his wife of 50 years, Genevieve, were celebrating her 95th birthday Monday afternoon when a Jeep Liberty slammed into the restaurant, breaking through a wall and poking into the dining room.
"All of a sudden it was just boom and I was flying through the air," he said.
For Carl, all he can do now is hope that his beloved wife of 50 years, will make a full recovery so they can truly celebrate her 95th birthday.
"I'm not much of a prayer, but I am now. I can't do it without her," says Sheldon.
Carl does not know when Genevieve will be released from the hospital but he says when she is, he will no doubt be coming back to the restaurant.
The driver of the 2003 Jeep Liberty, Conor Sullivan, 22, tried to run away but was caught by police. He faces charges of leaving the scene of an accident and resisting arrest.
