Sarasota woman shot in head, police ask for help in case

Sarasota, Florida -- A Sarasota woman is at Blake Medical Center in Bradenton with a gun shot wound to her head. Her name and condition have not been released. Sarasota police say they have few leads on this case.

Police say they need the public's help to solve this case. Just before 6:00 this morning, police found a woman shot in the head, sitting in her car practically in the middle of an intersection by the Sarasota Military Academy.

"I didn't hear anything. When I woke up at seven to take the kids to school, I saw all the chaos," said Angie Britton, a mother of two small children. Angie lives on the corner of 8th Street and Orange Avenue and said the scene outside her apartment this morning troubles her. "The fact that my kids play out here scares me a lot."

At first, the crime scene scared school administrators too when they arrived before students this morning. School buses were rerouted and parents were notified. Principal Christine Bowman said to students the scene looked like a simple traffic accident.

"There was no disruption to their education environment and there was no disruption to their safety. No question about that," said Bowman.

This case isn't so simple for police. "A lot of unanswered questions," said Genevieve Judge, spokesperson for the Sarasota Police Department.

Police know the woman shot in the head did not call 911, someone else did. The victim has been taken to Blake Medical Center. Judge said, "8th Street and Orange Avenue is where the victim and vehicle were found. At this point, it is unknown if this is the crime scene, if it happened somewhere else. That's part of our investigation."

As long as this case remains a mystery for police, some people living in the neighborhood say they will remain concerned about their safety and the safety of their children.

Anyone with information on this case is asked to call the Sarasota Police Department at 941-366-8000.
