School rezoning to ease crowding heats up in Pasco

Pasco schools struggle with overcrowding at several of its schools.

Next school year a new school now called GGG is what Pasco County Schools hopes will be the solution to several overcrowding issues. However, the district admits whenever going through rezoning sometimes it creates more problems than solutions.

"It's impossible there's no way to make everyone happy,' said Linda Cobbe, spokeswoman for the district.

It's the beginning of the painful process of deciding where students from jam packed schools will go next year.

"My son would be hugely affected," said Bethany Dixon, who has been through this before. Her seventh-grade son goes to overcrowded John Long Middle, and she wants him to stay there.

"He's in the gifted program so I need to make sure he stays with those kids; I'd hate to remove him. We've had to move previously," Dixon said.

Wiregrass Ranch High is in the worst shape with nearly 900 students more than it was built to hold. This is the second year it's been running on a 10-period day.

"We made the promise to Wiregrass that when high school triple G -- as it's called now i-- s opened that it would relieve that school," said Cobbe.

Parents and students are concerned about next year.

"He's really into the band, it's in his heart it's his passion and this is a really great band and great school and he would really enjoy to be here through his high school years," said Chris Scales, stepfather.

"I just feel like when I go to the band here I feel more at home feels more comfortable," said Tyrese Williams, a student.

One of the bright spots from this rezoning process this year's 11th-grade class gets to stay at its current high schools and when this school opens next year it will have sixth grade through eleventh grade with no senior class.

With both Seven Springs Middle and J.W. Smith Middle, Gulf Middle, River Ridge Middle/High, Seven Springs Middle, Anclote High, Gulf High, Mitchell High and Ridgewood High schools.  We do not yet know what areas will be rezoned.
