Brandon, Florida -- A mall jeweler is fighting for his life after deputies say he was trying to catch a suspect that had stole more than $20,000 worth of jewelry .
It all happened Tuesday night around 7 p.m. at Mirage Diamonds and fine Jewelry at the Westfield Brandon Town Center.
Deputies say Jean Celestin, the jeweler, chased the suspect from the mall to his car. Celestin landed on the hood of the vehicle and was dragged before falling off along State Road 60 and Town Center Drive. The suspect deputies say can be seen in surveillance video running out of Mirage Diamonds, with Celestin chasing behind him. The suspect had just stolen $23,000 worth of jewelry.
Celestin was critically injured after being thrown from the suspect's vehicle as he tried to stop him.
The jewelry store was closed Wednesday as Celestin fights for his life. Those who work near the jewelry store say people stealing things is common -- and while it's not smart to chase after the suspect -- some say it's hard not to.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office says the suspect is just over 6 feet tall, 25 to 30 years old with a trimmed beard. He was wearing a dark blue hat, long pants and black shoes. He arrived in a newer model silver two-door Chevrolet Camaro.
