Sheriff: $60,000 stolen from elderly man in internet scam

LAKE WALES, Fla. (WTSP) -- The Polk County Sheriff's Office said Robert Ratkovcic stole more than $60,000 form an elderly man in Lake Wales.

PCSO investigators said the victim downloaded what he thought was a virus-protection software after seeing a pop-up ad. Then, his computer stopped working.

Over time, the victim sent thousands of dollars in money orders to Thailand at the scammers' request, hoping to get his computer fixed.

“They bank on the fact that the overwhelming majority of the people are honest, they're ethical, they're moral and they want to do what's right, and that's what happened to our victim here,” Sheriff Grady Judd said.

Judd said there are several other victims across the country, and possibly many more. He's warning other people to be suspicious, don't download pop-ups and if you are a victim, don't be too embarrassed to tell law enforcement.

Ratkovcic is in jail in California for committing a similar crime there, according to Judd.
