POLK COUNTY, Fla. -- Driver Nikita Howard, 27, was driving around 2:30 AM on US 27, north of Big Sun Ray, when she lost control of her vehicle. After crossing over the median, it seems she tried to overcorrect the direction of the car, causing the SUV to steer off the road and crash into a pine tree, according to Pasco County Sheriff's Office.
Howard had critical injuries and was airlifted to a local hospital, and is still in critical condition. The passenger of the vehicle, Ashley Muller, 29, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Speeding and impairment may be possible factors in the crash and authorities are still investigating.
