Skimmers found at 3 Bay area SunTrust banks

Tampa, Florida – Surveillance photos have provided a good lead, but the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office needs the public's help to find the man who installed skimmers at three SunTrust Bank ATMs around the Bay area.

"I probably use this the ATM here at the SunTrust at least once every couple of weeks," said Dave Goodwin.

We caught up with the customer as he used the ATM at 403 W. Brandon Blvd., but he had no idea that the same machine had a skimming device attached to it just last week.

"That kind of bothered me a little bit,' Goodwin said.

The suspect also hit the location at 9601 Dr. MLK Blvd. East and 3511 Bell Shoals Rd. in Valrico by installing a long, thin silver box which contains electronic equipment and a camera above the keypad to record the customer's key strokes.

"In this particular case the skimmer house is attached to an electronic device that is actually copying and photographing you as you punch the keypad," said Larry McKinnon, spokesperson for the Hillsborough Co. Sheriff's Office.

10 News contacted SunTrust bank late Wednesday evening for comment about the incident.

"We are aware of these incidents, and clients who may have been affected have been notified," read a statement from Sue Mallino with SunTrust banks. "We suggest that people be alert when using any ATM; if it looks tampered with in any way, do not use that ATM. "

While the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office has confirmed at least three incidents so far, they can't discount the possibility that there are more banks affected.

They are warning customers to be vigilant by double checking the card reader and keypad by wiggling the devices to make sure they are real, in addition to checking their bank accounts every day for irregular activity.

Anyone with information on the case is urged to call the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office at 813-247-8200, or if your wish to remain anonymous and be eligible for a cash reward contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-873-TIPS or though the website at text "CSTB plus your tip" to C-R-I-M-E-S (274637).
