Sleepless night for neighbors as silent sinkhole forms

Spring Hill, FL -- Hernando County Sheriff's Office says several homes were evacuated tonight after a massive sinkhole appeared.

10 News Reporter Sarah Hagen was at the scene near the roadway at the intersection of Eldridge Road and Van Allen Way in Spring Hill.

It makes a person's heart pound just standing close to the sinkhole-it started out 25x25, 30 ft deep.

Now it is 40x40-it grew in just a couple of hours!

There are cracks in the road, cracks in the house closest to the sinkhole. People stood around gasping, caution tape kept everyone back.

One home is evacuated tonight.

Several others were evacuated as a precaution earlier.

A mother and son who had to leave and are home again now said they watched the earth open up in front of their eyes-and it was silent! No warning at all.

No doubt it'll be a sleepless night for neighbors. Residents in the one house still evacuated--still haven't been notified about what's going on.

Deputies will wait at the scene overnight to let them know. Deputies will knock on doors if neighbors need to get out again.
