Tampa, Florida - The beauty industry has called itself "recession proof", saying people will always need to a hair cut, but many people in the Bay area are finding ways to cut the costs.
Local cosmetology schools tell 10 Connects, they're seeing more clients taking advantage of services provided by their students.
Law requires the students to complete a designated number of training hours before they work in their chosen field, and that means you can take advantage of that time and the discounted rates for the services.
The Manhattan Hairstyling Academy in South Tampa says ever since the economy took a downturn, it routinely finds its waiting room at the school on South Manhattan jammed with clients.
"Before, we had a lot of senior citizens, but lately it has been an influx of younger clientele," said Natalia Pella with the Manhattan Hairstyling Academy.
The average hair cut and blow dry for medium length hair is $8.95. A full highlight will cost you about $24.95.
If you're looking for a great deal on a spa treatment, like a body wrap or facial, Gulf Coast College in Tampa is offering services at a fraction of the costs of a traditional salon
A facial runs about $25 and a body wrap at $28."It's really a great deal. It's fantastic. You're getting nice treatments and all of the students here do really nice work," said Lori Rosenthal, Skin Care Director at Gulf Coast College.
The Aveda Institute in St. Petersburg says it's seeing a similar boost in clientele.
We had to wonder though, what happens to those students once they complete their training hours.
Aveda told 10 Connects it's having no problem placing the students in salons. While a salon service may be considered a luxury, it's one many people are not willing to quite give up yet.
