Bad economy means good sex!

Spring Hill, Florida - It happens a lot during hurricanes and blizzards.

People spend more time at home. They don't venture out, which means they end up entertaining themselves any way they can. Now, during a struggling economy, it's happening again. Bad times in the boardroom make for good times in the bedroom.

Dr. Natalie Leibensperger knows this firsthand. The Spring Hill gynecologist with the bright eyes and warm smile talks about the recent baby boom she's seeing.

People are having sex, and a lot of it.

"You've lost your job, or you've lost your house, and you're having to cut back on everything. You're not going to go to the movies or go out to dinner," she says.

She adds with a sly grin, "Just like the hurricanes in 2004. That's what people are doing now."

This Spring Hill OB-GYN has seen as many as 23 new patients in a week, all of them pregnant. More and more women are sitting in her waiting room these days with round bellies and lots of questions. These women are enjoying healthy sex lives courtesy of a bad economy.

"They're probably having sex more, not having outside activities that they're doing instead. It brings people closer together. It's a huge stress relief for them," Dr. Leibensperger tells us.

But, there's more to it than just seeking good sex. Regular check-ups at the OB-GYN are costly.

Many people have lost their jobs and their insurance, which means they are not coming on a regular basis to get refills on birth control.

Dr. Leibensperger admits, "Sadly, when people cut back on expenses, they sometimes do not want to take care of that co-pay and the cost of birth control."

For the most part, the doctor says, with all the negativity around us, people just want to feel good. Having sex, she tells us, is great for the body. It decreases depression, helps you sleep better and is good for your overall well-being, she adds.

Plus, as everyone knows, she giggles, "It feels good."

"They did a study about how many times men think about sex, and it was incredible. The number of times men think about it. It was every second of the day, it's in all ads. It's everywhere," Dr. Liebensperger says.

One of the doctor's favorite patients is Cortney Reid, a 23-year-old mother of three. With her spunky attitude and kind smile, it's easy to see that Cortney loves being a mother.

Cortney also admits to loving her self-admitted "great sex life."

"When we're having sex, it's not what else is going on. It's him and I, we're focused on each other and being together," Cortney says.

But, that great sex life took a hit right before Christmas. Her husband, Ryan, got a ten-percent cut in salary. He also lost his company car and his insurance.

With three children already, they were not prepared for a fourth. Since Cortney has a rare blood disorder that creates problems with clotting, she could not take traditional birth control due to it's high dosage of hormones.

Not only was she not on birth control, Cortney and her husband were going to use their tax return money for a vasectomy.

"We were trying everything we could NOT to get pregnant," Cortney says.

But, they were too late. It happened one night after they were at home watching a movie. Soon after, she began experiencing morning sickness.

"I was scared to tell my husband, didn't want him to be stressed out about it," Cortney says.

Surprisingly, she says, the pregnancy has brought them closer together, and the sex is better than ever.

"It's where we can be stupid and silly and have a good time," Cortney says. "We are focused on each other!"

As far as another child on the way during a struggling economy, she sighs and then smiles, "You've got to keep your head up. It's a blessing."
