Polk County confirms first case of H1N1

Bartow, Florida - Polk County is now among the counties to have a confirmed case of the H1N1 flu virus.

Today the health department confirms a 9-year-old boy from Medulla Elementary in Lakeland had the virus. He is back in school now and has recovered.

Dr. Daniel Haight, director for the Polk County health department says, "This is our first confirmed case in Polk County, but it was not unexpected in light of the contagious nature of the virus."

All of the right steps were taken and the child was treated and doing better now.

Medulla Elementary will remain open in accordance with the latest CDC advice.
