When it comes to the social acceptability of shacking up, things have certainly changed.
According to the U.S. Census, less than 500,000 unmarried people were living together in 1960. By 2000, nine times as many people were "shacking up."
These days, it's clear more unmarried couples live together.
But two researchers at the Rutgers University Marriage Project say living together before marriage might not be smart. They give three warnings: the higher divorce rate, a lower quality of life and that living together doesn't necessarily lead to marriage.
And while the overall divorce rate is higher, a USA Today article reports people don't blame cohabitation.
In 1992, the National Survey of Families and Households found that couples who lived together before marriage were 46 percent more likely to get divorced. The study was based on 3,300 families.
iVillage.com offers four tips for couples who want to live together before marriage: don't do it more than once, put a time limit on it, don't do it if kids are involved and get engaged first.
