Tampa, Florida -- Experts say it's best to close your drapes and leave your pets at home during July 4th fireworks displays.
"Closing curtains at home will help keep out the noise and insulate your pet, so they don't get nervous," explained Christina Selter of Bark Buckle Up, a non-profit group dedicated to pet safety.

Selter said it's best to leave pets with their bedding and toys to help them feel more comfortable and at ease. Also, put pets in the quietest room in the house, which is normally the smallest room. Pets often feel safest in bathrooms or closets.
"You should never give your pet a treat while they're nervous during fireworks shows because that can make them sick," Selter said. It can also encourage negative behaviors.
If you do decide to take your dog to a fireworks show, it's a good idea to make sure that their collar is reflective or put them in a reflective vest. Oftentimes, when pets get spooked during fireworks shows, they will run and hide for hours at a time.
And, of course, keep your pet on a leash.

Pet owners can also get natural calming remedies from pet stores, such as lavender oil. As a last resort, veterinarians can prescribe anti-anxiety medications for pets.
