St. Petersburg, Florida - Bobbi and Eric Spearman say they can't escape the annoying buzz and biting of mosquitoes that started infesting their back yard, they believe, after a neighbor's pool pump stopped working, creating a giant body of green, stagnant water next door.
"His whole back is all eaten up," said Bobbi Spearman as she lifted up her husband's shirt to reveal his body covered in nearly solid red bumps.
The Spearman's say the tiny mosquitoes are even making their way into their South St. Petersburg house, biting them at night during dinner and while they sleep in bed.
"It's very uncomfortable. You get tired of scratching," Bobbi said, showing where mosquitoes also bit the side of her face minutes earlier.
The Spearman's finally discovered where all the mosquitoes might be coming from after peeking over their backyard fence and finding the neighbor's swimming pool filled with stagnant water.
The Spearman's say they were told by their neighbors they didn't have the time or money to fix the problem.
Bobbi Spearman says she called the city to complain, but got no results.
"I talked to seven different people and the last one finally said, 'Well, it's going to take us a while.'"
10 Connects contacted the Schweinle family next door, who apologized about the problem. They confirmed their pool pump had broken, but also said they were dealing with medical issues and mounting medical bills.
The Spearman's say they offered to let their neighbors use a spare pool pump, but the offer was turned down.
They are now hoping city officials will step in to take action, forcing the Schweinle family to take action.
Concerned over the spread of disease, the Spearman's look forward to the day when they'll get their backyard back from all the biting bugs.
