St. Petersburg, Florida - They're the hottest fashion trend in Europe: harem pants.

But what are they?

They're a shorter version of Hammer pants, the saggy-crotched pants made popular by music star M.C. Hammer in the 1990s. You could call them Hammer high-waters!

10 Connects Anchor Janie Porter put a picture of harem pants on her Facebook page, and the comments poured in! Tell us what you think of them by clicking on the comments section below.

Harem pants apparently first hit New York Fashion Week in 2008, and now, you can buy the pants at stores like Forever 21 and ShopBop.com.

Katrin Becker, who lives in Hamburg, Germany, says the look is hot in Europe and jives with a new trend toward a spiritual, bohemian style.

"The trend in Europe right now is really a lot about romance, a lot about spirituality, a lot about folklore," Becker said in a live interview via Skype on 10 Connects News This Morning.

"I guess that's why designers like Jean Paul Gaultier picked up on it, and now [the pants] are in stores everywhere."

Apparently, harem pants originated in India and gained popularity after the look was worn by a very chic French editor.

Most people who commented on 10 Connects Anchor Janie Porter's Facebook page didn't like the trend.

"I don't want to be a pirate!" wrote Mike Aquilia, who is also a 10 Connects producer.

But another Facebook friend, Brandy Stark, actually liked the pants.

"At least they are not the hip-hugging, underwear showing fashions that we still seem to produce here," she wrote.
