Update: Four days later a St. Petersburg 5th grader has just been enrolled in classes. Friday morning Karen Letzkus says she took her 10 year old son Matthew to Campbell Park Elementary where school officials called the Pinellas County School District and Starkey Elementary on her behalf. Later Friday afternoon she got a call from officials saying Matthew will be able to start school at Starkey Elementary Monday morning.
St. Petersburg, Florida - Tuesday parents flocked to the Pinellas County School District's administration building trying to get help for a wide range of problems. Karen Letzkus spent hours calling the office after her son was turned away from the school he was supposed to be attending.
Karen says "The first day of school is always exciting." But 10 year old Matthew is still waiting to experience his first day of the fifth grade. Tuesday evening all of his new uniforms were pressed neatly and were hanging up in his closet while his back pack was stuffed with new school supplies he hasn't been able to use yet.
Matthew was accepted to Campbell Park Elementary school located at 1051 7th Avenue South in St. Petersburg. But his mom Karen got a letter from the Pinellas County School District three weeks ago explaining that "For the past five years Campbell has not met state standards in Reading, Math and Writing. Campbell Park Elementary has been identified as a school in planning for restructuring which means the district must develop a plan to restructure the school."
The school earned a "C" grade for the 2008-2009 year, "B" grade for 2007-2008, "B" grade for 2006-2007, "B" grade for 2005-2006, and a "B" for 2004-2005. To check the performance of a school near you click here.
Matthew was given the choice of staying at the school or choosing from two "A" schools. He could attend Southern Oak Elementary or Starkey Elementary which is located at 9300 86th Avenue in Largo. Karen says "We chose Starkey Elementary School because it is closer to us."
Karen says she responded to the district's letter notifying them by mail of her choice. She didn't wait until the first day of classes to try to find out whether or not Matthew was officially enrolled at Starkey either. A week ago she traveled to the Pinellas County School District's administration building to ask officials there to double check to make sure he was enrolled at Starkey. She says no one there knew.
She says she was told the student's choices had to be manually entered into a computer and she would be notified of which school to take Matthew to over the weekend. Karen says she did receive a voicemail message from the district telling her to take her child to the "No child left behind school chosen" which in her case was Starkey Elementary.
Tuesday morning at 6 a.m. Karen and her son got dressed and took the city bus to the school because she was told parents would need to provide their own transportation for the first week of school.
Karen took pictures of her son when he arrived at the school and says they were both excited. Matthew attended Indian Rocks Christian School, a private school, from Kindergarten through 4th grade so this was a big step she says where Matthew would meet new teachers and make new friends. But Matthew was turned away. Karen says "First of all they couldn't find him in the computer system at all and then they said no he was not going to be enrolled there today."
She was told to head to the Pinellas County School District building where they'd just gone last week. But that was difficult Karen says because they were riding the city bus. Karen decided instead to call the administration office and she says she couldn't get through to anyone. "I haven't heard anything from anybody in the administration in the Pinellas County School District administration and I don't know where he's going to go to school."
Matthew meanwhile says he hopes "They get it all straightened out and I'll be going to Starkey."
10 Connects contacted the school district where officials say they're looking into the problem.
