Tampa standoff over $6 cab fare

Tampa, Florida - Tampa's tactical response team was called tonight after a man refused to pay a six dollar cab fare and barricaded himself in his home.

Police say around that around 6:00 p.m. they got a call from a United cab driver who said a man threatened him with a gun and refused to pay the fare. When they arrived, officers found 22- year-old Andrew Hickey heavily armed.

Hickey told dispatchers he was drunk and would shoot the driver or officers if they tried to come in the home.

Himes, Sterling and Paul Street were all closed during the standoff. After two hours, hostage negotiators talked Hickey out of the home.

"After his surrender, we did go inside the house and did a sweep of the house," said Keith O'Conner with the Tampa Police Department. "Inside the house, we did locate approximately ten weapons consisting mostly of rifles and a few handguns. He was heavily armed and there was a lot of ammunition in the house."

Hickey is charged with aggravated assault with a firearm and petty theft of the $6 cab fare. Police say there may be additional charges as they continue to investigate.
