St. Petersburg, Florida - Emergency room doctors at All Children's Hospital are seeing about 40 suspected swine flu cases each night.
Children who come to the hospital with flu-like symptoms are treated as though they have the H1N1 virus.
"If it looks like a pig and smells like a pig, it is a pig," said Dr. Al Causey, who works overnights in the emergency room.
Children with flu-like symptoms are given face masks to avoid the spread of the virus.
Those under five with no chronic health conditions are treated with a liquid Tamiflu variation. But that drug is in short supply. Wednesday morning, All Children's Hospital didn't have any samples to show.
This week, the Food and Drug Administration announced it approved a new swine flu vaccine.
Testing is happening at 27 locations across the country, including Tampa Bay Medical Research in Clearwater.
In the meantime, Hillsborough County public schools are taking steps of their own to prevent the spread of swine flu. A mass voicemail went out over the weekend, saying the district will administer the new vaccine as soon as it's available.
The district's also purchased 20,000 face masks to distribute to any students who have flu-like symptoms.
The first doses of the new swine flu vaccine should be available by October 15. Pregnant women, children and people who care for infants will have priority.
