Tampa, Florida - Teenage pregnancy is at an all-time high. For some young pregnant women, they have nowhere to go and would literally end up living on the streets if it weren't for a local charity.
The Alpha house of Pinellas County has been providing support for pregnant teens for over three decades.
"Alpha House helps them to get back on their feet, whether that's to continue their education, get their high school diploma, help them to find a job, to get back on their feet and become a better parent to their child," Said Audrey Ashoff, a case worker at the Alpha House.
Jessica Porter fell on hard times shortly after becoming pregnant and turned to the Alpha House for support. "Its helped me to become a first time mother, knowing the skills and nurturing part, it has also help me to go to school," said Jessica Porter.
Porter enrolled in a medical assistant program while pregnant and completed the program after giving birth to her daughter, now she's currently working in a doctor's office and is taking college level classes. "I want to go on and become an RN that is my goal, to become a register nurse, that's the goal." Porter said.
A new organization "Free Cakes for Kids" donated their first cake to the Alpha house. "Some of the teens here have never had a birthday party for themselves, so this will teach them how to throw a birthday party for their own children," said Mindy Hatfield, a volunteer with Free Cakes for Kids.
The Alpha House is currently seeking volunteers and other support for their programs. Reg and Heather are honored to be the emcees at the Alpha House of Pinellas County, Fall Gala Saturday, September 26 at 6:00 at the St. Pete Coliseum.
