Tampa, Florida - When you hear James Wilson, Colleen Krepstekies, and Alicia Williams talk about their studies, it's clear they are serious students who love their work. They're the kind of students 10 Connects Meteorologist Dick Fletcher would have admired.
Fletcher, or Fletch as we called him, passed away in February of 2008 and he's still missed by colleagues here at 10 Connects. When he died, the outpouring from the community was overwhelming and Dick's wife, Cindy, funneled contributions into the Dick Fletcher Memorial Scholarship Fund at USF.
This year's three scholarship recipients each embody qualities that Fletch was known for: hard work and a questioning mind.
James Wilson aims to get a Doctorate in Geology. He's already done research in several countries. "I like to go out and sit back and take everything in and think about why is the landscape the way it is," says Wilson. And, just like weather forecasting, Wilson says geology, "requires a lot of thought and careful observations."
Colleen Krepstekies faced challenges as an Army Captain in Iraq. Now, she's tackling a Master's Degree in Multimedia Journalism. "I love the writing and getting the stories," she says of her aspirations. And the Fletch scholarship money is helping ease her way.
"I'm living on financial aid, so any additional funds are hugely appreciated," says Krepstekies with a smile.
Alicia Williams caught the weather bug early. When she was in high school, she even shadowed Fletcher on the job. "Oh, he was very passionate about his job," Williams recalls. "He knew what he was doing and he took interest in showing me things, teaching me what he did everyday, and I just loved it."
Now Williams is on her way to becoming a college professor, teaching in the Fletch tradition. "Exactly! Passing on the knowledge of weather and, hopefully, my passion for it as well."
While he lived, Fletch was always generous with his time and talents and now, through these students, his generosity lives on.
