Washington, D.C. - Just after 11:00 p.m. on Saturday night, a majority of House members voted to pass the health care reform bill.
The vote passed 220-215. One Republican voted for the bill and 39 Democrats voted against it.
House members spent the entire day and night during this special Saturday session to get out the vote on the 2,000 page, $1.2 trillion measure. All the while, house leaders vowed for a late-night victory.
Just before midnight, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi took the podium to congratulate those who helped pass the bill. "Without President Obama, this victory would not have been possible," said Pelosi.
Late Saturday afternoon, the President delivered a speech on the House floor where he called on all Democrats to come together and pass this bill.
"This is our moment to deliver," the President said.
Soon after that, Democrats passed a procedural hurdle to pave the way for a final vote in their favor.
The Republican Party responded with this statement by Michael Steele: "Democrats, led by Nancy Pelosi, finally got what they devised behind closed doors: a government-run health care experiment that will increase family's health care costs."
The bill now goes to the Senate floor where it must pass before it can get the President's signature to become law.
