From the season debut, Kynt and Vyxsin captivated America as the
"stand-out team" on the 12th season of the hugely popular CBS series "The Amazing Race". A true Reality TV first, the "Scene duo" quickly attained coverage in a diverse range of publications: from People Magazine, TV Guide, and US Weekly to the Los Angeles Times, Variety, and even Nickelodeon Magazine! In the debut episode they came in second place, and throughout the show they kept up the pace, consistently placing in the upper half of the competition. Because of their avant-garde aesthetic, this dynamic duo was initially underestimated by the other Race competitors. After proving tenacious in physical challenges and consistently finishing favorably, it was clear that this "Pink and Black Attack" meant business. "We're prissy but we're potent," Kynt explained in one episode.
Although Kynt and Vyxsin were first noticed for their over-the-top makeup, signature hairstyles/colors, and gender-blurring fashion, it was their "alternative" approach to the game, and life itself, which truly solidified their status with viewers. As other teams argued viciously and obsessed over the "million dollar prize," Kynt and Vyxsin displayed energy, enlightenment, and empathy. Viewers were touched by Kynt and Vyxsin's unending enthusiasm, light-hearted humor, and deep respect for each other and, most importantly, the locals of each foreign country. Vyxsin noted, "Kynt and I never lost sight of the greater goal. These locals in each country are not 'props' or 'part of the show.' It is unfair for us, as Racers, to project our
stress onto them." The Race's first "scene kids" were voted the "FAN
FAVORITES" of the season in polls conducted by media outlets including CBS, Entertainment Weekly, and Reality News Online.
The most difficult part of the Race was undoubtedly keeping up their daily "make-up" routine. Race producers were shocked that the duo was able to keep their appearances relatively intact, as they globe-trotted from continent to continent and climate-to-climate.
"Kynt and Vyxsin carried tons of makeup," said Race creator Bertram van Munster. "They're very pale, with very dark, accentuated eyes and beautiful, skinny, little black eyebrows."
After a dramatic non-elimination leg in Florence, Italy, the duo fell prey to a "Speedbump," an additional challenge that no other team had to tackle. This task proved to be the "nail in the coffin," as beloved host Phil Keoghan read them their last rites at the Pitstop in Mumbai, India. The duo did not leave empty handed, as Keoghan named Kynt and Vyxsin the "Most Fashionable Team in Amazing Race History"--- an award Kynt and Vyxsin take very seriously. "I'm the first person to bring a flat-iron on the Amazing Race," said Kynt.
Keoghan's keen eye for Kynt and Vyxsin's style was only the beginning, as the world's LEADING chain store for music-inspired youth fashion - HOT TOPIC - quickly took notice, and invited the duo to their international headquarters in City of Industry, California. "I felt like I was visiting Santa's Workshop," stated Kynt regarding their arrival at the headquarters. "This is where the magic begins, where so much incredible fashion originates, this is our teenage dream come true." Vyxsin added, "It is incredible and humbling to be a part of the Hot Topic family. This has been our favorite store for so many years. In fact, this is where I purchased my first Pink Hair Dye and Hello Kitty T-Shirt!" Often described as "The Loudest Store in the Mall," Hot Topic is a natural "pit stop" for the "Pink and Black"
racers. Hot Topic opened their first store in 1989 and was the FIRST national mall chain featuring music-inspired apparel and accessories.
Aimed at teens and the young at heart, Hot Topic has also brought iconography from underground cartoons, cult movies/television, and comic books to the shopping shelves of middle America.
As models for the alternative fashion franchise, Kynt and Vyxsin can be seen on the Hot Topic website and advertisements adorned in new and exclusive fashion by Hello Kitty, Skelanimals, Tripp, Social Collision, and Alchemy Jewelry.
