Rocky marriage ignites domestic violence fire

Apollo Beach, Florida - The house is a gutted, charred mess as a steady stream of cars drove by on Wednesday. People wondered about the relationship that led to such fiery violence.

"I'm just shocked and devastated by this," says Sheila Bernstein, who is acquainted with the couple who lived in the home. "I didn't think it would go to that kind of extent. They had a lot of problems, but to me, if you have problems you walk away from it."

Investigators say it appears Christopher Hanney doused his wife Audrey Mabrey with some sort of flammable liquid and then lit her on fire.

Mabrey, 26, was choppered to Tampa General Hospital with burns over most of her body. Hanney, 44, is also in the hospital with unspecified injuries. The hospital is not releasing the couple's conditions.

As neighbor Angelo Valdez views the debris, like most he finds it hard to comprehend how things went so wrong. "He seemed like a nice guy... friendly, polite," Valdez says of Hanney.

But what happened Tuesday wasn't the first sign of trouble at the house. In October a deputy responded to a domestic violence call, but just a few days later Mabrey signed papers declining to prosecute.

Hanney is a TSA security officer at the Sarasota Bradenton Airport.

Mabrey is a longtime employee of Chili's Grill and Bar in Brandon and the company is providing grief counseling there.

Also left amid the ruins of this marriage are two very young children and a teenage boy, and that's who Bernstein also worries about tonight. "He hurt his children on top of it - over doing something so foolish and stupid."
