Tampa, Florida - Tampa Police are working to notify the family of one of their officers after she was injured while on vacation in Mexico.

The female officer was flown to Tampa this morning and underwent surgery at Tampa General Hospital and is in critical condition.

Carnival Cruise Lines issued a statement saying the officer was one of five people who left the ship in Cozumel and rented a Jeep on an independent shore excursion.

The Jeep was involved in an accident which injured everyone in the vehicle.

The Tampa Police officer and another person were flown to Tampa for treatment. The other three people are being treated in Cozumel.

The group was aboard the Carnival ship "Legend."

The ship sailed from Cozumel at approximately 7 p.m. Wednesday night, one hour after its normally scheduled departure time, and is continuing on its scheduled itinerary.

The ship is based in Tampa and sails every Sunday to the western Caribbean ports of Grand Cayman, Cozumel, Belize and Roatan.
