STORY UPDATE: Officer fired, Chief suspended over kicking incident

Sarasota, Florida -- A Sarasota Police officer has been fired and the chief given a two week suspension without pay following an investigation of the Sarasota Police Department. 

The results from an incident where Juan Perez escaped from a patrol car at the Sarasota County Jail's sallyport, and was kicked by Officer Chris Childers while he was handcuffed on the ground.

The city then tried to settle the matter by offering a $400 payment to Perez.

After months of investigation, punishments were handed down: Childers was immediately dismissed, Officer Demitri Konstantopoulos  received a one day suspension, Sgt. Kenneth Castro received a letter of reprimand, City Risk Manager Larry Hutton received a letter of reprimand, and Police Chief Peter Abbott has been suspended without pay for two weeks.
