Valrico, Florida - A Valrico mother contacted 10 Connects, complaining her children have to walk along a busy road to access their new bus stop. The bus stop was moved because it was three houses away from a sexual predator's home.

The school bus stop used to sit at the corner of Durant Road and Highcrest Circle, until it was discovered that sexual predator James Mizzell lived three houses away. According to the Department of Corrections, Mizzell's probation states that he is not allowed to live within 1,000 feet of where children gather.
The bus stop was moved to the corner of Durant Road and Fox Hill, but Alita Reibling complains the new bus stop is still unsafe due to speeding traffic on Durant Road. Her children have to walk along Durant to access the new bus stop.
"In addition, they still have to walk by Mizzell's home," she explained, "so this isn't helping anyone."
To make matters worse, when 10 Connects visited the site, overgrown weeds and foliage come right to the roadway. There is no sidewalk on the Reiblings' side of Durant Road.
"To walk on a sidewalk, my kids would have to cross Durant, walk on the sidewalk, and then cross back over to get to the new bus stop," Reibling said. "It's a terrible situation."
Reibling suggested another bus stop location on her street. The Hillsborough County School District listened to her idea and visited the site, but the location is still too close to Mizzell's home.
Now, Reibling and her husband want to change the law so that other factors are taken into account when bus stops are moved away from sex offenders' homes.
