Tampa, FL -- Serving the homeless and families in need is one of the main missions of Metropolitian Ministries.
And the need is greater this year than in years past.
The organization estimates it will help 23 percent more families this holiday season, but donations have dropped by 50 percent over last year.
With more than 11 percent of Floridians out of work, there are more people than ever in need.
They plan to give out about 14,000 food boxes over the next week but the charity needs donations to make that happen.
"They can go out and either buy turkeys and food stuff or they can write a check and we'll go buy the items for them. They can come and call and volunteer. They could do a food drive in their office or in their business. There's a lot of things they could do. Just do something," said Metropolitan Ministries President Morris Hintzman.
While we were at the Tampa distribution center today, Metro Ministries got a special delivery of a thousand frozen turkeys.
But they still need about 28,000 more to assist everyone this Thanksgiving.
