Venice, Florida - Deputies say a man killed his estranged wife Monday afternoon before police shot him to death when he aimed a gun at them.  Alan Provencal, 69, is accused of shooting Carolyn Provencal, 69, at the South County Courthouse in Sarasota County.

Neighbors say the couple has been going through a painful divorce - filed June 6, 2008 - that was scheduled to be completed Monday afternoon.  They also say Alan threw Carolyn out of their North Port home a couple of years ago when he caught her cheating with his best friend.

Deputies were called to the Robert L. Anderson Administration Center at 4000 S. Tamiami Trail in Venice at 3:39 p.m., but the suspect had already fled.  They say six shots were fired, several from point-blank range.

North Port police found him driving to his home 13 miles away, and when he pulled into his garage, he refused to put his gun down.  After pointing it in the direction of the officers, one fired two shots that struck him and killed him.

A spokesperson from the Sarasota Sheriff's Office says Alan Provencal may have been waiting for his wife to show up for a 4:30 p.m. appointment at the courthouse and it appears neither one ever made it into the building.
