LaBelle, Florida -- Animal Control has removed about 600 cats from the Tenth Life Sanctuary in Hendry County.

Now several Bay area rescues are taking some of the cats into custody: SPCA Tampa Bay in Largo, Friends of Strays in St. Petersburg and Cat Depot in Sarasota.

The exact number of the cats sent to the rescue groups are not known at this time, but it is said to be a large amount.

Earlier in the week, officials seized the cats from the Hendry County animal sanctuary, where the cats were reportedly living in deplorable conditions. The sanctuary has been closed down, but no charges have been brought against its owner at this time.

The University of Florida is continuing to work out the transfers and adoptions of more seized cats.
