Tampa, Florida - In 2007, when Miley Cyrus came to town, scalpers were reselling the singer's concert tickets for hundreds of dollars above face value. In an effort to stop that, the entire Miley Cyrus 2009 North American Tour instituted a paperless ticketing system.
That system was used Tuesday night at the St. Pete Times Forum and while officials reported no major problems, some concert-goers were not happy with the change.
"My intention was to pay for my granddaughter and her mother to come to the concert, but because I bought the tickets I had to be here with the credit card and my I-D in order for them to get in," said a frustrated Melody Williams of Ruskin.
Under the paperless system, the person who buys the tickets must show up at the concert venue and show the credit card used to complete the transaction as well as a government-issued I-D. As long as the names on the credit card and I-D match, they're allowed in and given a seat locator. If a person buys more than one ticket, everyone in their group must go in at the same time.
"I think it's to make sure whoever purchases the tickets initially gets to use the tickets at the concert," said Elmer Straub, the V.P. of event booking at the Forum.
However, 10 Connects still found a number of scalpers outside the Forum including one man who resold a pair of tickets for $1,200. The scalper, who did not want to be identified, met the people he was reselling the tickets to outside the Forum and walked them to the gate.
Straub expects more concerts in the future to use the paperless system. He says Tuesday's show was the first time all the tickets for a Forum concert were paperless. But Straub notes last year about 20% of the tickets for an AC/DC concert at the Forum were paperless.
