Clearwater Beach, Florida-- A suspect wanted in the overnight shooting of three men in Clearwater is now dead himself after an afternoon shootout with sheriff's deputies on Clearwater Beach.
It happened just a block east of crowds celebrating Spring Break on Clearwater Beach around 4:30 p.m. Saturday.
Sheriff's investigators say 19-year-old Alexander Epstein was walking out of a home on Poinsettia Avenue when he was approached by an undercover detective who attempted to make an arrest. Detectives say, at that point, the 19-year-old pulled out a gun and was shot by the detective. Wounded, Epstein continued walking across the street still holding the gun. Deputies say that was when a second detective opened fire, killing the suspect.
"He was given numerous warnings, none of which he heeded, so that's why the undercover detectives shot," said Barreda.
Epstein was the suspect in an overnight shooting that left two men dead and another wounded. 20-year-old Ken Kubes and 23-year-old Ibrahim "Mo" Kamara were both shot and killed at a party early Saturday morning. Dennis Miyawa was also wounded and rushed to Bayfront Medical Center, where he remains in critical condition.
Investigators don't yet have a motive in the shootings, but friends of the three victims don't believe Ben, Mo, and Dennis were the intended targets.
The Sheriff's Office continues its investigation, and is also reviewing the suspect's shooting, placing the deputies involved on routine paid leave.
