CLEARWATER, Florida - Pinellas County Commissioners have drafted a new ordinance that could extend a tourist tax past 2015 to help pay for a new baseball stadium - but only if it falls within Pinellas County limits.
The Tourist Development Council recommended to the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) that the bed taxes remain at 5 percent even after bonds on Tropicana Field are paid off in 2015.
On Tuesday, commissioners seemed warm to the idea, which the ABC Coalition estimated could contribute $60-70 million to construction of a new stadium. A public hearing and vote to extend the tourist tax will take place in November.
