Washington, D.C. -- The Department of Justice has closed its criminal investigation of Sarasota Congressman Vern Buchanan and will not bring criminal charges against him. This is the second federal investigation that has cleared Buchanan.
The Federal Election Commission also cleared him of wrong doing regarding allegations of illegal campaign contributions. The House ethics committee also cleared Buchanan on the campaign matter.
However, Buchanan still faces an iquiry by the IRS but his attorneys believe the Department of Justice announcement today ends that investigation. Buchanon also still faces the House Ethics Committee on allegations that he offered to pay off a former business associate to influence his testimony in the campaign contribution case.
