  • (Clarion Ledger) -- Just when you thought they couldn't get any bigger.

Tom Grant of Cleveland and his crew of hunters harvested this new state record alligator weighing 697.5 pounds, breaking the former state record by 7 pounds. Other hunters in his crew included Jim Reed, Michael Robbers, and Kenny Winter.

The catch was made on Friday in Issaquena County.

The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks, said the record alligator was caught on a private hunting club in Issaquena County, near Fitler, according to reports.

The previous record holder and the record-setting alligator were both caught west of the Mississippi River Levee on private land -- about 16 miles apart from one another, according to reports.
