Emmy-award winning reporter Isabel Mascareñas joined 10 Connects News as a General Assignment Reporter for the Sarasota/Manatee County Bureau in March 1995. She is now the Education Reporter. Isabel's expertise on local and state school issues helps her keep viewers informed about the changes in education and how it affects their children.
Isabel has earned three Emmy awards. In 2007 she won an Emmy for her story called, Teens & "Pharm" Parties. The story is about teens and their addiction to prescription drugs. In 2004, she won an Emmy for "Teens' Drug of Choice." The story focuses on teenagers' addiction to caffeine and the harm it does to their bodies and minds. In 2003 Isabel won her first Emmy for her September 11th one year anniversary story titled, "Children Remember 9-11". The story is about three Sarasota students who recall their classroom visit with President George W. Bush on the morning of the terrorist attacks. The story received two Emmy nominations. "Children Remember 9-11" also won a regional Edward R. Murrow Award and was recognized by Florida's Associated Press.
Isabel Mascareñas began her broadcasting career in Miami as an intern at WPLG-TV. In 1988, she became an associate producer at the CBS affiliate WINK-TV in Fort Myers. Isabel was promoted to a reporting position and fill-in anchor position in 1990. In 1994, Isabel helped launch WINK's weekend morning and noon newscasts as anchor and continued as a reporter until her move to ten News.
Isabel was born in Cardenas, Cuba. She and her family escaped the communist nation in 1967 and settled in Miami. Isabel is fluent in Spanish. She is a graduate of Barry University in Miami Shores where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications. Isabel and her husband George live in Sarasota with their two dogs Bailey and Bear.
