Bartow, Florida - When accused murderer 14-year-old Cassidy Goodson of Lakeland appeared in court for the first time Friday, she was wearing a bright lime green jail inmate uniform and her long brown hair was pulled back giving the appearance as if it had been cut short.

The Kathleen High School freshman is being tried as an adult as she faces a first degree murder charge and a charge of aggravated assault in the death of her newborn baby boy.

10 News previously did not identify Goodson, but are now doing so, because adult charges have been filed, as well as the Polk County Sheriff's Office believing she was not a victim of sexual abuse.

"Just sad. Sad. Cause you can always, you know, give the baby up," said a parent of a Kathleen student, who didn't want to be identified.

According to officials with the Polk County Sheriff's Office, the high school freshman killed her baby because she "didn't know what to do with it" and "didn't want the relationship with her parents to change."

"It's sickening. Never should have had a baby anyway. And she's still a baby herself. Yeah, she's a baby herself and that's a shame, you know," said parent of a teenage girl, Mike Edmond.

Detectives say the teen went into labor September 19 in a bathroom at her home, took a pair of scissors to "pry the baby out," and delivered the child alive and into the toilet.

Investigators say Cassidy lifted the moving infant from the toilet, felt for a pulse, found one, then placed her hands around the infant's neck and squeezed until he wasn't moving or breathing any longer. She took the infant's pulse again and found none.

Detectives add that Cassidy cleaned up the bathroom, bathed herself and the dead infant before placing him in a shoebox along with soiled towels and clothing.

Authorities say the girl's mother did take her to Lakeland Regional Medical Center that day, after seeing a mess in the bathroom, and the teen claimed she miscarried.

The mother found the baby's body in a shoebox three days later.

According to detectives, the teen admitted to choking the newborn. The baby was a full term, 9.5 pound boy. Cassidy weighs 100 lbs.

According to detectives, the teen hid the pregnancy from her parents, however family members had told her mother they thought the teen may be pregnant.

Polk County sheriff Grady Judd said the girl's mother was in denial.

"She probably was scared at one point, that's why she did it. But then again, it was bad on her behalf that she did it, and not telling anyone to help her out," said Kathleen High senior, Dikerria Wilson.

Goodson appeared in court for her first appearance Friday at noon. The court proceeding only took a matter of minutes. Judge Susan Flood explained the charges against her and told her that a public defender would continue to represent her.

Flood denied her bond, so Goodson will remain in jail. As the court proceeding ended, Judge Flood said to Goodson, "Good luck to you, ma'am." 

Meanwhile, Goodson's Assistant Public Defender, Howard Dean Garrett, said she was going to file a bail motion today to get her client out of jail.

Goodson's family and friends did not attend the court appearance. Detectives say she had been trying to conceal her pregnancy from her family by wearing baggy clothing for the past several months.
