San Antonio, TX (Sports Network) - Eric Soza threw for 200 yards and three
touchdowns as the Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners held on for a 38-31 win over
the Texas State Bobcats in a Western Athletic Conference battle at the
Alamodome.
Soza completed exactly half of his pass attempts (15-of-30) and was also
intercepted twice for UTSA (8-4, 2-3 WAC) which has won three straight to
close out the regular season. Soza also rushed for 98 yards and another score.
Shaun Rutherford threw for 324 yards and a two touchdowns on 31-of-42 passing
but was sacked five times for Texas State (3-8, 1-4) which has lost five
straight. Rutherford also had a team-high 42 yards rushing and a touchdown on
the ground. Isaiah Battle brought in seven passes for 119 yards and a
touchdown to lead 10 different receivers that caught passes.
UTSA led 10-0 midway through the first quarter on a 35-yard field goal from
Sean Ianno and a 79-yard punt return from Kenny Harrison.
Texas State cut into that lead with a 57-yard touchdown pass from Rutherford
to Battle.
A 29-yard touchdown pass from Soza to Cole Hubble put the Roadrunners up 17-7.
Rutherford scored on a two-yard run late in the first quarter to once again
bring the Bobcats to within three points.
On the next possession, Soza led the Roadrunners 75-yards in just over two
minutes and threw a five-yard touchdown pass to Kenny Bias to give the
Roadrunners a 24-14 lead at intermission.
Soza then scored on a two-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter to
pull the Roadrunners even further ahead.
A 23-yard field goal from Will Johnson and a six-yard touchdown run from
Terrence Franks got Texas State to within a score, 31-24, going into the
fourth quarter.
UTSA got a 34-yard touchdown pass from Soza to Jeremiah Moeller and once
again held a double-digit lead, 38-24.
Texas State cut into that lead with a 15-yard touchdown pass from
Rutherford to Brandon Smith with 1:40 remaining. However the Bobcats were
unable to score on a final drive as UTSA held on for the win.
UTSa had a 499-392 advantage in total yards including a 299-68 edge in
rushing yards.
